Mare Nostrum elaborated on the principles and practical recommendations to have the use of Variable Message Signs harmonized at level of message encoding and of pictograms to be used. The main tasks of Mare Nostrum have been: – Update the group’s knowledge and perspective concerning current European VMS signing practices; – Identify signage needs in terms of the harmonisation process and continue empirical tests in order to ensure their usability; – Update and improve the Deployment Guidelines; – Pursue legal and formal processes bringing on effective harmonisation of VMS at the international level (UNECE) and on national laws and rules. Mare Nostrum/VMS: Harmonised recommendations on what information and how to put it on VMS are mature. Further evaluation and some extensions are ongoing and envisaged for the future. EasyWay has started the WP.1 (UNECE) standardisation of VMS recommendations to ensure the consolidation of harmonised VMS design.
